Multi-flash Photography

I thought I'd have a go at a night time multi-flash photo, using a long exposure time and a single 580EX II flash unit.  This involves mounting the camera on a tripod, setting it up for a long exposure, 30 seconds in this case, and then running around the scene firing the flash manually many times.

To create a spooky effect I have place a green lighting gel over the flash lens.

It took me about five attempts before I got a worthwhile result.

I thought I'd have a quick walk around the town and take some rough and ready photos, using no flash or tripod, and using a high ISO setting to avoid camera shake.  The camera I've used is a Canon EOS 40D along with a EF-S 10-22mm lens which will do f/3.5 at its widest aperture.

Here are the results.

Photosynth your photos to 3D

I have just been taking a look at Photosynth from Microsoft.  If you haven't encountered this before, it is software which will stitch together many photos of a scene or object to create an almost 3D reproduction.  That 3D version of your photos can be viewed online by anyone who cares to look.

I decided to take a load of photos, 44 in all, of a Neolithic burial chamber, which is an arrangement of stones, like a miniature Stonehenge.

Then I downloaded the Photosynth software and started a batch process of those 44 images.  It worked perfectly first time, and after about 20 minutes the end result had been automatically uploaded to the Photosynth website.

I've just been experimenting using a Speedlite ST-E2 transmitter mounted on my EOS 40D, to trigger my 580EX II flash unit.

The following photo was taken at night, in the garden.
